I listened to the ABBA Gold album yesterday while cleaning/sweeping/swiffering/cooking with my wireless headset on my head, singing and dancing along to all the tunes.
Family gave me some sideway glances. I didn’t care!
Dog was… confused, but guess what? I didn’t care!
I amazed myself that I knew the words to most of the songs…
After a while though, I started to cringe a little at some of the lyrics.
Let me share:
Money Money Money
I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Ain’t it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
That’s too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn’t have to work at all, I’d fool around and have a ball
These contemporary, feminist-oriented times would never encourage a young woman to aim for this as a solution. Except…there are plenty of ‘gold diggers’ around, amirite? lol 😉
Cool song though. I especially like the first four sentences.
Take A Chance On Me
If you change your mind, I’m the first in line
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you’ve got no place to go, if you’re feeling down
etc
We can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we’re together
Listen to some music, maybe just talking, get to know you better
‘Cos you know I’ve got
So much that I wanna do, when I dream I’m alone with you
It’s magic
You want me to leave it there, afraid of a love affair
But I think you know
That I can’t let go
This song is interesting because the underlying theme is that the singer, the girl, was rejected. The man moved on to some new girl. But then things didn’t work out for him and now she, the singer, is making herself available to him again.
The song is upbeat and fun, rather than the ballad/sad tune one might expect from love rejection. But still, I cringe a little…
There are a lot of songs I like on this album, but especially:
- Fernando
- The Winner Takes It All
- Knowing Me, Knowing You
- Lay All Your Love On Me
- Thank You For The Music
- Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)
Ok, I could just list the whole album. Or maybe it would be easier to list the ones I’m not crazy about.
Voulez-Vous does not appeal to me at all, for instance. 🙂
Your turn! Do you like ABBA songs? If yes, which ones? If no, why not?
See you in the comments!
Chiquitita, tell me what’s wrong
You’re enchained by your own sorrow
In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see that you’re oh so sad, so quiet
Chiquitita, tell me the truth
I’m a shoulder you can cry on
Your best friend, I’m the one you must rely on
You were always sure of yourself
Now I see you’ve broken a feather
I hope we can patch it up together
Chiquitita, you and I know
How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they’re leaving
You’ll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Try once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
So the walls came tumbling down
And your love’s a blown out candle
All is gone and it seems too hard to handle
Chiquitita, tell me the truth
There is no way you can deny it
I see that you’re oh so sad, so quiet
Chiquitita, you and I know
How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they’re leaving
You’ll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Try once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Try once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita

I’m only aware of the radio singles, and I like them. Now I have to give ABBA a real chance and listen to ABBA Gold!

I have always loved ABBA! I can’t choose a favorite song – most are amazing. I do agree with you about Voulez-Vouz, though. I can do without that one.
Have you seen Muriel’s Wedding? It’s one of my favorite movies ever and it has an amazing ABBA soundtrack!

You’re the second person to mention this movie. No I haven’t. I’m going to put it on my must watch list. )

I’m a huge ABBA fan, probably because my mom listened to them a lot when we were young. “Eagle” is my favorite song, but I also really like “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Angeleyes,” “Fernando,” and “Honey, Honey.”

I like Dancing Queen as I remember dancing to it in first year university, mid-70’s – when I was “young and sweet, only seventeen.”

I’m not a big ABBA fan, but oddly, my Dad was. It made him laugh. So now, I’m a fan because the music reminds me of him.

I love ABBA songs, but it has been a very long time since I have listened to any. Actually, yesterday as you talked about it in your blog post I could hear the songs running in my mind. I am like you in that I don’t care that much for Voulez-Vous, but I do really like Momma Mia. It is so fun, and I also liked the movie by the same name. Thank you for putting a lot of light and bright in my life today. ❤❤❤❤

The world would be such a nice, simple place if everything happened according to ABBA lyrics.
