The high point today was knowing boot camp was on. Today is my third time going to the church basement and exercising with other moms.
The low point was that I woke up at 4:30 am with a headache coming from my neck and shoulder area.
I made coffee and took my phone to read up on some blogs. Caffeine is usually enough to make a neck kink go away…but not always.
It wasn’t working. So I heated up my bean bag, plugged in the tens system, and electrocuted my tight muscle in my neck/shoulder area while I waited for the family to get up.
I’m parenting a single child this week, the other kid is on a school trip. Plus, my partner didn’t need a lunch today as he was leaving later than usual…he would eat at home.
That was a high point. Having to only make one packed lunch, and not having stress of getting teenagers out of bed and off to school in a timely fashion was a nice little break from the usual morning mayhem. 🙂
After the child left for school, I did some stretching in anticipation of my class. But that pesky headache wasn’t going away…so I laid down on the sofa for a few minutes and promptly fell asleep. That was a low point as I only woke at 9:10 and class starts at 9:15.
We had to move cars, but he was still in pjs. When he was ready to move his car out of the way to free mine, the garbage truck came along and blocked us into the driveway. Took another 5 or 6 minutes to wait for him to pass.
This would make me late for boot camp class. A low point, but not the end of the world.
Finally I left. Just before I pulled out I realized I forgot my runners so I had to go back in and get them. It’s such a production to get dressed in this country in winter…ugh.
I made it to class about 10 minutes late which wasn’t a big deal. Today, there were about ten moms there, and two had two kids each with them. The three tots and the infant were playing with toys on a mat and we moms started our exercises. I kept an eye on the cutie babies, reminiscing how it used to be for me, but counting my lucky stars that those toddler days are over. 😛
So that was sort of a high point. The kids gave us a bit of entertainment while we sweated and worked out.
The next low point came when I had to do things on one leg.
I have no balance.
There is a plausible explanation for this:

The inner ear (also called the labyrinth) contains 2 main structures — the cochlea, which is involved in hearing, and the vestibular system (consisting of the 3 semicircular canals, saccule and utricle), which is responsible for maintaining balance.
As some of you know, I had a childhood illness while living in Switzerland that affected my hearing. What most of you probably don’t know is that the illness I suffered (Meningitis) plunged me into a coma for two weeks, and when I came to, resulted in paralysis. Half my body, my left side, was paralyzed, and although today I am normal (hahaha!) at least in terms of mobility, my sense of balance is slightly impaired due to the lingering hearing loss.
You should see me walking around at night; I’m a little unsteady in the dark. My daughter notices when I slow down a bit and comes to hold my hand, which I so appreciate as she does it very subtly.
Anyway, my trainer there was so kind. When she demonstrated the core strength, or weight lifting exercises to me and another woman, and then watched us do them, she helped me adjust to accommodate my wobbliness, especially with the left side. That was definitely a high point.
For instance, one exercise was to stand on one leg. The opposite arm had a 10kg ball about the size of a basketball in the hand, which I had to lift above my head 12 times.
I couldn’t maintain my balance while standing on one leg.
Similar with a 10kg bag with handles on each end. I had to do lunges, while holding the bag in front and lifting them up to work the biceps.
I kept tipping over. 🙂
She adjusted me where necessary and at one point I went back to jump rope and pushups, and before I knew it, it was time to cool down and head back home.
High point – I went despite the headache.
Low point – the headache got worse.
Before I left, I asked my trainer if she knew anyone who might need a dog walker. I gave her a brief description of what I do, and she announced it to the remaining ladies still working out.
High point – I remembered to bring my advertisement cards I printed off.
Another high point – 3 ladies asked for a card. 🙂
When I got home, my partner was just leaving, so I went to take a shower and gulped down some Advil.
I’m sitting here in my little robe, all alone in the sun-flooded living room, typing out this blog post. My third and final coffee is all gone and, major low point here, I ate two cinnamon twists. AFTER EXERCISING FOR 40 MINUTES.
So much for carb-less, sugar-less eating during the week. Ugh.
In my defense, I was feeling sorry for myself, and although I don’t feel better about consuming the sugar now, I did enjoy the twists. Farm Boy makes them in their in-store bakery and they were delicious.
And this brings us to almost lunch time on this Hump Day. I have carb-free beef vegetable soup and that’s that.
