Things feel a little stale around here lately.
We’ve been back from vacation now for a while and it was only today that I did a proper grocery shopping. I took the girl child with me, and a list, and picked up almost all I had planned.
Except butter. They want me to pay $6.99 for a pound of butter.
Or watermelon. Same price for watermelon.
I think that’s ridiculous.
What’s even more ridiculous is that the only place that sells butter for half that price, about $3.99 or even less on occasion, is Costco. Has anyone ever gone to Costco for just one item? Or, say, for only six pounds of butter and nothing else? We all know if I go to Costco I’ll get home with six pounds of butter and $300 worth of other stuff.
I do not have $300 lying around for other stuff at the moment.
Boo.
So instead, while at a normal grocery store, I bought apricots, nectarines, blueberries and cherries. And no butter nor margarine. Let them eat toast with peanut butter, honey, jam or, I don’t care, Nutella. π
See what I mean? Even my words are stale…
I have a lot of photos to sort through, and some interesting adventures to reminisce over that we had in Switzerland, but my head’s not in it at the moment, so bear with me. I promise when I do find the time and stamina, you will be taken on a very high mountain, twice, and quite possible entertained by the sound of some cow bells as well. π
In the meantime, stay cool (if you’re in North America), dry (if you’re in a place where it’s raining) and warm (if you’re Down Under)…
Keep writing.
Okay I would not pay 6.99 for a pound of butter as well. Thatβs ridiculous..

$6.99 for a pound of butter. Must be special butter. When Nutella is a cheaper spread the world is surely backwards. So…how much did you pay for per pound for all that fresh fruit?

The fruit was on sale and in season. π Yeah, I hear you. We use unsalted butter by some mass dairy brand, two of which I like (but there are many others). We don’t eat Margarine which is, in my view, not a food at all, so I’d rather go without butter than fake spreads or expensive butter. π

My wife goes to Costco for “just a few items” and the end result is always huge. Oy vey, I know better to question it. Fortunately Costco is not close so those trips are not often. I wondered why she always has extra butter in the freezer and now I know she stocks up when she gets a deal.

YES! Butter is very important to people, it appears to me, based on some of the feedback I’m getting here. π

That’s a lot for butter!!!! I refuse to use any butter other than Kerry Gold butter and it’s only $2.49lb here in Arkansas.
I have never been in a Costco or a Sam’s Club but we used to get Costco pizza at work and I loved that pizza!!!!

Wow, Some things in Canada must be more expensive than here. I am with Joni on this one.

Another very good reason to keep an eye on the flyers. If I see sales I really like for things that I can freeze or are nonperishable, I usually jump on them. π

I wish I had a Costco near me…..I’ve never actually been in a Costco. The closest is and hour and a half away and not worth the gas for the drive. I stock up on butter when it is $2.99 a pound and freeze it, usually around Thanksgiving, Xmas and Easter. I would not pay $5.99 for butter either – let them eat jam!

There’s a grocery store called Metro here in Canada that every once in a while has butter on sale for 2.99 per pound. I only like two brands (Lactancia or Gay Lea). I don’t have a Metro near me so when this happens, I get a text from my mom asking me if I need butter, and if I say yes (I always say yes) she will pick some up for me. She has a Metro walking distance from her place. π But, it doesn’t happen often that it goes on sale that cheap… boo.

I’ve often made the trip to Costco specifically for multiple pounds of butter. I use way too much butter, but working on any cake kind of thing, I always need a ton (at least a pound for a batch of my icing). Costco can be dangerous.

I buy a lot of butter too and stick it in the freezer. My 11yo has decided baking with butter is her chosen hobby, plus I LIKE butter so there’s that. π

If I’m down to 3 pounds or less in my freezer, I come close to panicking. I rarely use anything other than real butter in the majority of my baking and cooking, so I really do blow through it quickly.

Oh, I don’t think your words are stale; I think they are universally resonant! WE get it. We all definitely have been there!

I got up at 430 to be at work early. I came home and took a nap. My entire day so far.

I most certainly will NOT “bare” with you; I shop with my clothes on, thank you very much.π But I will “bear” with you because I feel your pain and share it – $6.99 for butter is insane. And I do drive 5 miles to get olive oil for 5 to 10 dollars less than at the nearer grocery stores.

So which is it? Bare or bear? Lol

Stay dry is pretty relevant to me on a day like today. We’re on our 21st day straight of rain…

I’m one of the few people who will, indeed, go to Sam’s club just to get tea, coffee, and butter. I can usually get in and out quick since now they let you check yourself out. Honestly, a lot of people are busy filling their carts to the top so I can move fairly quick and get what I want. I’ve gone there for toilet paper, but they keep moving it around so I’m not as fast at retrieving it.

Ha! But see, you mentioned toilet paper. This would happen to me. I would walk to the butter, pass the toilet paper on sale, pick up the toilet paper, get the butter, push the cart out, see a stack of teenage boys pants, realize he will need pants for school…
