Recently, Bryan Adams gave a concert in a town not far from Toronto. The radio stations have been playing his songs all the time lately, sometimes two an hour. With that, I traveled down memory lane to my high school days when he was up and coming and very popular (here in Canada).
Cuts like a Knife
Summer of ’69
Run to You
One Night Love Affair
I created a playlist in Spotify so I can listen to him at will (or until I’ve had enough.) 🙂
Did you know Brian Adams is vegan? And almost 60? And still performing in concerts?
The stamina he must have… lol
I think that’s impressive.
But he’s not the only playlist I have going.
For writing, I either listen to nothing (absolute silence, which is tricky in this house), or classical/instrumental music will do. Playing softly, not at full blast (so no Beethoven). 🎶 🎵 🎶
U2 has some decent instrumental music that suits my writing, and, surprisingly, Axl Rose’s November Rain is kind of easy to listen to in instrumental version.
(Yes I know I’m a little weird…) 😉
A few weeks ago, when I was into researching tattoos I was into the glam medal/rock n’ roll. I listened to Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, some Queen…
One thing I am not really familiar with is contemporary pop, the stuff the kids listen to these days. Ask me if I’ve ever listened (on purpose) to Tayler Swift, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande or whoever is on the top 40 these days …(no). I just have no interest in that type of music.
My teen son hates pop of all kind. He listens to RUSH, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, stuff like that.
My tween daughter has a variety of different tastes, much of it stuff she and her gal pals dance to. But because of her brother’s influence, she also likes the classic rock (and stuff her GenX parents listen to).
For example, she’s the one who introduced The Reflex by Duran Duran to her friends, or Don’t You Forget About Me (Simple Minds, from the Breakfast Club album). And, it was she who requested Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody at the Valentine’s school dance. She said most of the kids had never heard of the song, but some of the grade 8 boys and girls approached her later, and told her they were happy that she did that.
Huh.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’m going to search up some Blue Rodeo, some Dave Brubeck, and maybe some Johann Sebastian Strauss. See if I can create a new playlist.
Then, I gotta go to a rink.
🙂
The Reflex! Oh my God, that rocked my world when it first came out. Until then it was all Michael Jackson and Prince for me. One summer as a kid, I decided I wasn’t going to watch tv for the whole summer. That’s when I really remember Bryan Adams from. He was all over the radio then. So many good songs. Thanks for getting the nostalgia rolling.

I remember being in Toronto for a conference (I’m older than you) at a Yorkville Hotel – I had just graduated, and was so bored with the conference I went to a record store at Bloor/Yonge St. (Sams?) and bought Bryan Adams cassette tape – he had just come out with Cuts Like a Knife. I don’t like what’s out now, maybe the odd song, but it’s interesting that kids listen to the older stuff – I do think we had better music. I couldn’t tell you a single song that Justin Bieber or Drake sings….even though they are “famous” Canadians!

Right. Drake? He’s so famous but I haven’t heard any of his music either!
Did you go to Sam the Record Man on Yonge? He finally went out of business a few years ago…

Yes I think that was it. I knew they went out of business….we still have one record store here in town, but it is independently owned. Kids like to buy those old albums for cheap…..I still have a box of albums in my basement, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, The BeeGees, 70’s stuff, as I think cassettes didn’t come out til the 80’s and Sony Walkmans. My parents bought me a stereo with speakers when I was in second year at U of T, which was a big thing as not many kids in residence had stereos, and I still have it in the basement too…..waiting for it to be worth something vintage wise! Hope your wind storm isn’t too bad – it’s already started here.

I like 80s and 90s pop music within limits. But I’m not up on the contemporary stuff.😊

Me, you and your kids have the same taste in music. 😁 The 80s/90s genre of music rocks!
